Red Butte Garden decided it was time to revamp their treasured amphitheater to accommodate larger crowds, higher-profile performers, and to tie it more seamlessly into the rest of the garden. MGB+A was awarded a contract with MTR Landscape Architects, the garden’s master planners, and architect Paul Brown to design and construct the new amphitheater and an adjacent Rose Garden. Faced with a very tight schedule to complete the drawings and construction before the new concert series began, a design-build contract was signed, including Big-D Construction. MGB+A played the role of local lead and liaison between consultants in what proved to be a very big challenge. Skyrocketing construction costs led to redesigning and phasing improvements as budgets permitted. MGB+A led the way through a difficult redesign and value engineering process, to meet the client’s needs while staying true to the design program and intent.
